Resuscitate review

Thanks to everyone who made it down to Bettys last Sunday for the inaugural While_you_were_Sleeping of 2010.

We had a steady stream of people wandering in off the street / coming to see what their friends did in their spare time / wondering where those weird noises were coming from. ;-)

The venue was packed full with electronic gear with VJs Yetimon and hallucinagenius making the most of the wall to wall coverage to add their personal brands of visual soul to the audio soundtrack.

Some DJ Guy played an uplifting and eclectic mix of electronic-and-not, with deep beats represented by While_you_were_Sleeping co-founder DJ Mayhem.

Core While_you_were_Sleeping artists Group 5, Malty Media and Panoramica all played true-to-form, while newcomer Counting Waves + blew everyone’s socks off with a beautifully deep drone set to round out the proceedings.

A couple of local producers approached us at the gig, so expect our line-up to vary in the future, as we continue to showcase the freshest and best underground talent from our fine city.

Thanks to everyone who performed, including the fantastic VJs, Ben for producing such enticing artwork, and Bettys for having us! We hope to do it all again in early 2011 :-)

Since 2003 While_you_were_Sleeping has been a platform for getting some of the most interesting music around Wellington out of people’s flats and somewhere you can hear it.  Great listening music, with a focus on electronic sounds and manipulations.

While_you_were_Sleeping is back from some time recharging its batteries, so come and enjoy a leisurely Sunday with quality sets from local producers, DJs and VJs keen to get your brain cells sparking.

Performers

Malty Media

Yeah those guys who remixed the Flake ad, Stuart (Aquaboogie) & Michael (Jet Jaguar).  The ones who produced hours and hours of slightly baffling psychedelic material for their dedicated radio show on Radio Active FM.

Panoramica

Expect lots of found sounds – everyday noises, sometimes clear and familiar, other times worked into beats and tones.  Panoramica plucks rhythms and tempos from whichever dance subgenres suit the mood and turns out engaging, atmospheric live sets.

Counting Waves +

A survivor of one of New Zealand’s few 90s shoegazer bands, Counting Waves + is still exploring the textures of the guitar.  He now works solo, transforming his live guitar work with the aid of electronic processing.

Group Five

Bringing a unique mix of hip-hop and gogo beats with modern classical and free jazz sampling, Group Five will keep your head nodding without descending into smoothed out cafe fodder.

VJs

VJs Yetimon and hallucinagenius will be working closely with the soundboys, mixing up a swirl of video across the three screens at Bettys.  Not sure a laptop performance is much to look at?  Rest assured the visual accompaniment will enhance the While_you_were_Sleeping experience no end, whether by complementing the sounds or creating curious juxtapositions.

DJs

DJs DJ Mayhem and Some DJ Guy have been pimping ambient, electronic and an assortment of leftfield good times since New Zealand first got electricity.  Pretty much.  Mayhem is one of the hosts of Radio Active FM’s The Session and Some DJ Guy curated The Gathering festival ambient zone, as well as compilations of New Zealand ambient music.

See you there!

Bleep – Live Performance @ Happy (Sunday 21st June 2006)

First of all, a big thank you to the people who came along to the first Bleep workshop this Sunday. We had some good noodlings, and made some nice sounds, and by all accounts much fun was had all round.

There will be another Bleep workshop in six weeks time, on Sunday the 23rd of July, so if you missed the last, or just don’t want to miss the next, keep this day free and all shall be good. At this stage it looks like we’ll be doing some kind of a circuit bending workshop.

In the short term future we have a gig next Wednesday the 21st of June at Happy at 8pm, and some people need to play. If you can come along and you want to play please let me know ASAP, as I’ll need to get some things organised for it. Oh, and anyone who didn’t come along on Sunday is most welcome. We’re going to need as many amplifiers as we can get hold of, as Happy’s PA only has a limited number of inputs for us to use. Either that, or many mixers so we can bounce it all down to one output. But if you can provide any equipment like this please do let me know.

Summary – gig on next Wednesday the 21st of June at Happy, I need to know who’s keen to play (short group sets, minimal pressure) and who has gear we can plug in to.

Cheers!

So come on down to Room 101, sit by the fake fire, and soak in the electrical impulses floating around you. $8, from 8PM, be there.

NZ Music Week Live-to-Air (Thursday 25th May 2006)

As part of NZ Music Week, the Session will be featuring a live-to-air from While_you_were_Sleeping regular Panoramica.

Continuing his trend of more music and less sleep, Panoramica will play a brand new set featuring samples from recent found-sound compositions, based on samples collected in Europe, America and Canada last year.
