WYWS and Capital Recordings present Montano (26 August 2005)

Montano On Friday 26 August Montano (Michael Upton and Shanan Holm) played music from their upcoming album on Capital Recordings. In support were their good buddies Group Five and Aquaboogie, along with sets from Michael in his Jet Jaguar avatar and Shanan playing Octif material. Rob (Section GFX) provided some nice visuals. In all, it went very well, and since Jet Jaguar is heading back to his homeland (Monster Island, somewhere of the coast of Japan, to teach English to bored middle-aged Japanese housewives), it is unlikely that the monster nite buddies will be playing together for a while.

WYWS and City Gallery late night sessions (6 and 27 May 2005)

In May performances by members of While_you_were_Sleeping were held at the Wellington City Gallery. These performances, by Frey and Aquaboogie (6 May), Seht and Peel (27 May) coincided with the exhibition of British abstract minimalist painter Bridget Riley. The music complemented the art pretty well, and both events had a very good turnout.

In a fit of creative commons fervour, Stuart (Aquaboogie) stuck his set for the gig up on archive.org.

A further Late Night Session will be performed at the City Gallery in October. Group Five and Dirac will be playing.

WYWS presents Biosphere and the Catchpool Found Sound project (March 18-19 2005)

While_you_were_Sleeping presents Biosphere and The Catchpool Found Sound Project (Poster) It’s the biggest thing we’ve ever done. On Friday 18 March 2005 the norse god of ambient, Geir Jenssen aka Biosphere, will perform in Wellington. Supporting him is occasional While_you_were_Sleeping collaborator Andrew Thomas.

The following night, Saturday 19 March, over a dozen assembled musicians, including Biosphere, will perform music made from the sounds of the Catchpool Valley in the Orongaronga hills west of Wellington.

These gigs have been over 18 months in preparation. The sounds of the Catchpool were recorded by Victoria University electronic music students at Easter last year, and circulated amongst interested musicians. Several VJs have collected video footage from the Catchpool Valley, and will provide a visual accompaniment for the music.

Both events are being performed at the Adam Concert Room, Victoria University of Wellington Music School. The Biosphere concert starts at 9pm, and the Catchpool concert starts at 8pm.

Tickets for each night are 20+booking fee at Real Groovy, or $25 on the door.

WYWS presents Electronic Monster Nite (January 7 2005)

While_you_were_Sleeping #9 (Poster) Jet Jaguar headlined a night of electronica madness at the Bodega in early January. Making up the five-headed monster were JJ, While_you_were_Sleeping regulars Group Five and Aquaboogie and While_you_were_Sleeping first-timer Octif, who also teamed up with Jet Jaguar as Montano. Montano have an album release on Capital Recordings later in the year.

VJing for the event was another newcomer, Yetimon.

You can read the press release for the event (PDF 39KB).

It was generally agreed that this was one of the best While_you_were_Sleeping nights yet.

  • Joseph Waters (percussion and electronics) with Rayzordoll,
